This week, the American Library Association asks us to celebrate National Library Week and focus on the valuable contributions a library makes to its community. Here at the Allentown Public Library, we would like to recognize our dedicated volunteers who help make our branch such a wonderful place to visit.
There are four fabulous ladies who manage our used book stall. Several years ago, Rosemarie Avar, Betty Kline and Ramona Truncer saw an opportunity to assist our library by reorganizing our large, dusty collection of used books for sale. These volunteers, along with Girl Scout Troop 71692, redesigned our second floor and culled an unruly collection of books. They created a warm, inviting room where visitors browse an eclectic assortment of titles. Each week, now joined by Andree Derry, these enthusiastic volunteers maintain a fresh selection of books and provide our library with a significant source of revenue.
At our central desk, volunteers Kathy Fidler, Tom Kilgore and Carol Ruthven assist the staff with the countless tasks needed to circulate a book to readers near or far. The reliability of these volunteers has allowed our branch to meet the growth and demands of a busy, thriving county library system. And a special compliment to Joe Yehl and Roxanne Robinson, who both care for our building, our books and our mission with infinite patience.
We know our volunteers are our greatest assets. Please join us this week in thanking these very special volunteers for their commitment and dedication all year long to the Allentown Public Library.
