LAMBERTVILLE: Coming: ‘Sparkle Week’ in May

By John Tredrea, Special Writer
   LAMBERTVILLE — “Sparkle Week” is coming to Lambertville soon.
   It’s not about jewelry. It’s about turning trash into treasures.
   This year, city residents will celebrate Sparkle Week in during the second and third weeks of May.
   ”Our community is very supportive of green initiatives,” said an official. The mayor and City Council “are proud to sponsor what has become a community event, and a long-standing tradition that predates the 1960s when Lambertville celebrated ‘Operation Sparkle.’”
   The city will partner with Goodwill to pick up and recycle electronics, furniture and other items for resale.
   ”As the old saying goes, ‘one man’s trash is another’s treasure,’” said Mayor David Del Vecchio. “And, thanks to Sparkle Week, this stands true today in our beautiful city. By continuing our partnership with Goodwill, residents will have the knowledge that their unneeded things may find a second life in another home.”
   If your garbage pick-up is on Tuesday or Wednesday, you can put your extra trash out to the curb on May 7, for pickup on May 8 or 9..If your garbage pickup is on Thursday or Friday, you can put your extra trash out to the curb on May 16, for pickup on May 17 or 18.
   The Department of Public Works will pick up trash on the regularly scheduled pick-up day for each zone. Do not place additional items at the curb once all other garbage has been collected.
   City officials noted that, with the implementation of same-day trash and recycling, the city is projecting a savings of $9,000 in recycling, which means over 100 tons of garbage is redirected from a landfill.
   Other green initiatives include:
   — A projected 14 percent reduction annually in electrical service through the e-procurement auction held in March through the South Hunterdon Renewable Energy Cooperative;
   — Reduction in electric fees due to an upgrade of the heating system at the library from electric to gas;
   — A new HVAC system at the Justice Center funded through an energy grant. For additional information about the City of Lambertville, visit the City’s website at www.lambertvillenj.org.
