Frank Newport will speak at FoHVOS session Sunday

Frank Newport, Gallup’s editor in chief, will speak at the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS) annual meeting on April 29 at the Visitor Center at the Ted Stiles Preserve on Baldpate Mountain.
His talk will provide a look at the way Americans view the environment as a public policy concern and priority, with a focus on the inevitable interweaving of the environment with politics and the economy.
The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m.
The public is invited to attend the free event, which will include a guided walk on the preserve.
There will be an update of the Friends’ preservation and stewardship work over the past year and a look at activities planned for marking the group’s 25 years of preserving open space in the Hopewell Valley.
Jim and Rhonda Vinson, of Pennington, are this year’s recipients of the Jack Gleeson Environmental Award.
The Vinsons provided the funding for production of FoHVOS’ “Guide to Walking Trails in the Hopewell Valley.”
Copies will be available at the meeting. Light refreshments will be served.
Dr. Newport, a 22-year Valley resident, who (with his wife Kim — a former member of the Hopewell Valley Regional Board of Education) is an avid hiker, serves on the board of trustees of Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space.
He is immediate past president of the American Association for Public Opinion Research and has a weekly radio show — “What Are We Thinking?” — on NPR’s Philadelphia affiliate WHYY-FM. He also has discussions on the weekly “Attitude Check” segment on public radio’s nationally broadcast, “Marketplace.”
The Baldpate Visitor Center can be accessed from the parking lot on Fiddler’s Creek Road, Titusville.
Guests can either hike up or take the shuttle van. There is limited parking near the top, including four handicapped spaces.
