American Cancer Society Is Calling All Appetites Against Cancer

By Xenia Acquaye, Community Mission Manager, American Cancer Society
This Sunday, April 29, 2012 the American Cancer Society’s Trenton Crusade Against Cancer, Horizon NJ Health, and the Mercer County Cancer Coalition will hold Trenton Men Cook Against Cancer after a 3 year hiatus. The event formerly named Real Men Cook, promotes prostate health, cancer awareness, and healthy lifestyles through a food tasting competition with dishes prepared by men who either live in Trenton or have a relationship with the community.
The mission of the American Cancer Society’s Trenton Crusade Against Cancer is to reduce the incidence and mortality from cancer in Trenton for minority and underserved communities by developing partnerships and implementing a comprehensive community health plan for prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer. “Part of the Trenton Crusade’s goal is to maintain a community presence to promote programs, screenings, and services available to residents via media and other outreach venues. So we are very happy to revitalize this event in order to promote cancer awareness with the help of our event chairs, Alysia Welch-Chester and Zachary Chester.”, says Natasha Coleman, Regional Vice President of the American Cancer Society.
Other than food tasting, event attendees will also have the opportunity to have a free health screening done on Horizon NJ Health’s mobile health unit. The event will be held in Trinity Cathedral’s Synod Hall from 1:30pm-4:30pm. The cost for the event is $10, but for $20, you can purchase both an event ticket and a recipe book featuring recipes from this year’s Trenton Men Cook Against Cancer and past winners. Tickets can be purchased online at at the door the day of the event.
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
