Colts Neck band celebrates 10 years

COLTS NECK — The Colts Neck Community Band, presenting its 10th anniversary season, will perform two concerts this spring.

The first concert will be a collaborative performance with the Freehold Township High School Symphonic Band on May 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Freehold Township High School, 281 Elton-Adelphia Road, Freehold Township.

The combined bands will perform the “1812 Overture” by Tchaikovsky with more than 165 musicians. The Colts Neck Community Band will also perform a medley of Gershwin songs, as well as works by Fillmore, Hosay and Holst.

According to a press release, the Colts Neck Community Band was founded by Richard Frankle, who served as the director of bands in the Colts Neck K-8 School District for more than 30 years. It was Frankle’s dream to create a community band of area musicians and talented high school students.

The band currently has more than 80 members.

The band will perform its second concert at 7:30 p.m. May 24 at Colts Neck High School, 59 Five Points Road, Colts Neck.

In celebration of the band’s 10th anniversary season, a special treat for this concert will be an oboe performance by Briana Tarby, who was taught by Frankle in Colts Neck.

Tarby is completing her master’s degree in oboe performance at Mannes School of Music in New York and will perform two movements from Concertino for Oboe by Kalliwoda.

The band will also perform tunes from “TheWizard of Oz,” a medley of Gershwin songs, “Persis Overture” by Hosay, “First Suite for Band” by Holst, and “The Footlifter March” and “Rolling Thunder” by Fillmore.
