BORDENTOWN CITY — The gray clouds looming overhead didn’t dampen the spirits of the entire student body at St. Mary School from holding its second annual “Mini Relay for Life.”
On April 26 the students of St. Mary School walked through the parking lot, down the street, around the corner and back into the parking lot in order to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
The event was started last year when, now eighth grader, Natalie Mischlich, went to Principal Frank McAneny and asked if the school could hold an event like “Relay for Life.”
Natalie began her quest because her mother, Ann Marie Robalik, is a cancer survivor. She celebrated five years of being cancer-free on May 1.
"I was really proud of her last year when she said she would like to do it,” Ms. Robalik said. “She went to (Principal) McAneny on her own, I didn’t make any calls. I did help a little but she really handled it all on her own.”
Principal McAneny, who is an eight year cancer survivor said the “Mini Relay” is a really great thing for the kids to be involved in.”
The students raised a total of $951 which was then donated to the Florence Township Relay for Life held over the weekend in honor of the St. Mary School team.
Last year the students were able to raise more than $900.
"The kids are so excited to do this,” Ms. Robalik said.
In order to raise money for the event Principal McAneny said the students were asked to get sponsors to help raise money.
Ms. Robalik said the whole experience has been a blessing.
"I tell everybody, ‘breast cancer free for five years on May 1,’” she said. “I hope that these kids never have to think about cancer. I hope that they never have to hear those words and be scared to death.”
Ms. Robalik said she is not just looking for a cure — but also prevention.
"Everyone always writes that they’re trying to find a cure, but I’m looking for a prevention,” she said. “Yes of course, a cure is wonderful but if you have the prevention it would be that much better. I’m just very grateful to the kids for all of their support.”
St. Mary School serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
