EB’s Mattis wins top individual award at Penn Relays

East Brunswick’s Sam Mattis was a standout at the Penn Relays April 26-28.

The reigning high school national champion in the discus added the prestigious Penn Relays crown to his impressive scholastic résumé on April 27. The EBHS senior unloaded a personal best 211-11 in winning the high school discus competition at the nation’s oldest and largest track and field meet. The throw was the farthest in the nation this spring and made him No. 3 alltime among New Jersey throwers.

The victory also earned him the Outstanding Individual Event Athlete of the Meet award.

Mattis was competing in the discus circle he will be calling home starting next year. He’s headed to the University of Pennsylvania, which hosts the relays at the famed Franklin Field.
