Mr. Nehila Sr., 74 of the Parlin section of Sayreville, diedApril 21, 2012, in Lady Lake, Fla. Acertified public accountant, he was hired in 1978 as director of financial affairs for the Archdiocese of Newark. While serving as director, he was named by the Most Rev. Peter Leo Gerety, D.D., Archbishop of Newark, upon approval by the Vatican Offices of Pope John Paul II, as chancellor of the Archdiocese of Newark, making him the first non-ordained Catholic to hold the post. He was predeceased by his father, Joseph John Nehila; his mother, Paula Scimeca Nehila; and a brother, Robert Nehila. Surviving are his wife, Florence Fitzmaurice Nehila; five children, Joseph C. Nehila Jr., and his wife, Heather, Patrick T. Nehila, Therese Marie Dwyer, and her husband, Gregory, Jeanne Marie Ortiz, and her husband, Paul, and Richard B. Nehila; a sister, Paulette Russell; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other extended family members. A Mass was offered at Our Lady of Victories Church, Sayreville. Private cremation followed. Arrangements were under the direction of Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, Parlin.
