NORTH BRUNSWICK — Less than a year after losing a seat during school board elections, Anthony Brooks has found a seat open for him.

Brooks, 49, was sworn in to the North Brunswick Board of Education on April 25. The six-year resident is replacing Michael Dawson, who has moved out of the area.

“When this opportunity became available, I thought it would be the ideal time to get heavily involved in the school district and have the responsibilities of a board member,” Brooks said.

Afinancial adviser by trade, Brooks has been an educational consultant in financial literacy for middle and high school students. He also has provided staff development workshops and written a high school business curriculum.

He is an active member of the Linwood Middle School Parent-Teacher Organization, the school his 12-year-old son attends, and is the former president of the Newark Public Schools business and finance advisory board and was vice president and on the board of directors for the Friends of Island Academy in New York.

Brooks said he has been trying to bring educational programs to the high school, combining his corporate experience with the educational experience. He hopes to establish alliances with corporations and institutions of higher learning to provide learning opportunities that extend outside of the classroom.

“I want to do what I can to get the community involved,” he said. Contact Jennifer Amato at [email protected].
