Police continue to investigate last week’s fatal car crash that claimed the life of a Rider University student’s father.
Chunhua Jin, 53, of Shanghai, China, was killed early April 4 when the van he was riding in collided with the rear of a truck at the intersection of Route 1 and Henderson Road, police said.
Jimmy Jung, 56, of Edison was driving the mini-van north on Route 1, taking the Jin family to LaGuardia Airport in New York from an area hotel at about 4 a.m. when the accident took place, police said.
According to police, the family was returning to China after visiting their 21-year-old daughter, Xiaoyun Jin, who is a student at Rider University in Lawrence.
The victim was a rear seat passenger in the van and was killed on impact, according to police.
Mr. Jin’s wife, Juing Zhang, 52, Xiaoyun, and grandson, Yiwei Jin, 7, were injured in the crash and taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment, police said.
According to police Xiaoyun was treated and released while her mother and Yiwei were admitted to the hospital, both in stable condition.
Neither Mr. Jung nor the driver of the 2002 Mack truck, Otis G. Roberts Jr. of Ewing, was injured in the accident, according to police.
Both the Monmouth Junction and Kendall Park first aid squads as well as paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital responded to the scene, police said.
The Monmouth Junction Fire Department and the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office also responded to the crash.
A spokesman for the university would not comment Monday and referred questions to South Brunswick police.
Police said Tuesday that the circumstances surrounding the deadly accident were still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office investigator Greg Morris at 732-745-3300 or Patrolman Frank Mongalieri at 732-329-4646.
