EAST WINDSOR — On May 6 at approximately 9:58 a.m., township law enforcement officers responded to a reported motor vehicle collision into T.G.I Friday’s restaurant at Town Center Plaza on Route 130.
Herman Handelman, 81, of North Pondview Boulevard in Monroe, was driving a four-door Nissan Altima south within the parking lot of Town Center Plaza directly in front of the ShopRite Supermarket, and intended to bring the vehicle to a stop, however, he unintentionally depressed the accelerator, according to a press release from the East Windsor Police Department.
Police said the vehicle then veered southwest and impacted a parking island before striking a parked vehicle and two additional parking islands. The Altima came to a stop when it impacted the northeast corner of the TGI Friday’s restaurant building.
Dolores Handelman, 81, and also a resident of North Pondview Boulevard in Monroe, was a passenger in the Nissan Altima. Both Mr. Handelman and Ms. Handelman incurred minor injuries and were transported to Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in Hamilton.
The parked vehicle that was struck, a 2010 black Ford Fusion, undertook significant rear-end damage, police said. All three parking islands sustained damage to the existing landscape. The Altima was significantly damaged and was towed from the scene.
Mr. Handelman was charged with careless driving.
Police said that officials from the East Windsor Township Construction Code inspected the T.G.I. Friday’s building and determined the structure to be safe.
