Runners participating in HomeFront Run For Hope were running to help send kids to camp this summer.
Women on Mission, a group of women who banded together to run, put a big dent in that goal with their efforts.
”We decided we were going to do this run and we would get T-shirts and be women on a mission,” said Judith Clarke of Hightstown. “We began as a book swap group.”
Her group of eight women raised almost $5,000 to run at Educational Testing Services in Princeton on Saturday morning.
”The majority of us have never run a 5k, we decided we were going to do it,” said Cheryl Kirton, of New Town, Pa. “We got very competitive and send out emails. It shows anybody can do it. This was good for our first mission.”
More than 210 runners had pre-registered and another 100 were expected to walk up, said Heather Lyon, a project coordinator at HomeFront who was running the charity 5k.
The Lawrenceville-based organization was hoping to raise $25,000 to send 25 children to summer camp this year.
HomeFront’s mission is to help homeless and at-risk families to break the chain of poverty, said Ms. Lyon. They help families get off the street and into a safe place to live and provide services such as family preservation and child care.
