By Elisabeth Bonasera – VOICES Chorale
"Cathedral Classics" :
A special concert at the Princeton University Chapel
Presented under the auspices of The Princeton Festival, VOICES Chorale will join forces with the
Bucks County Choral Society to create a magnificent 140-voice choir for a collaborative concert
Sunday, June 10, 2012, 7:30 pm
Organ prelude at 7:10 pm
Princeton University Chapel, Princeton NJ 08540
The 70-minute program, performed in the spacious Princeton University Chapel, features the joyous Poulenc Gloria, with soprano Jane Kamp, Handel’s Coronation Anthem No. 4, as well as selections by Rachmaninoff, Howells, and Bairstow. Also on the concert are short organ interludes and Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei, a choral setting of the popular “Adagio for Strings.”
Lyn Ransom, VOICES’ Music Director, and Thomas Lloyd, Bucks County Choral Society’s Artistic Director, will conduct. The prelude on the Chapel’s Skinner organ by John Bailey of the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral, will include rarely heard works of Nigerian master composer Fela Sowande.
Says Lyn Ransom, “I love working on the music with the singers. They’ve responded beautifully to the bright rhythms of Poulenc, the rich melodies of Howell’s Like as the Hart, the grandeur of Rachmaninoff and Bairstow, and the mystery of Barber’s Agnus Dei. What the singers like, I’ve found, audiences usually love. I think that this three-way effort between VOICES, Bucks County Choral Society, and the Princeton Festival will lead to an outstanding concert experience.”
