ROBBINSVILLE — Brownies in Troop 71146 of the Allentown-Robbinsville Girl Scouts completed their Wonders of Water Journey project recently by working together to clean up the stream at the soccer fields in Community Park.
The troop started off its journey by making “water promises,” such as turning off the faucet as they brush their teeth, to raise their awareness of water conservation and the importance of clean water. Members of the Peace Corps also came to a troop meeting to speak about their experiences in Africa, specifically the arduous task of walking miles every day to obtain clean drinking water for daily use.
The girls also explored the effects of water pollution through hands-on environmental activities at their meetings.
”We demonstrated what will happen if you pollute water; it turned out to be really yucky,” Catherine Yi said.
The troop also brainstormed different ways that they could bring their message of clean water to the community. The girls decided to clean the stream by the soccer fields off Gordon Road and were thrilled to hear the town would install signs around the stream to relay their message about the need to keep the stream clean every day.
To complete the journey the troop, parents and their leaders — Lara Keller, Sandy Carduner and Jean Marie Alban — met together at the stream and collected eight bags of trash.
