By Maria Riegel, Special Writer
The girls’ varsity lacrosse team won the Greater Middlesex Conference Championships May 10, beating Old Bridge 12-3.
”The finals at Old Bridge on Thursday were outstanding,” Athletic Director Elaine McGrath said. “We won 12-3 and it was our fourth consecutive GMC Championship.”
The girls also won the semi-final game in the GMCs by a score of 12-3 as well, according to Ms. McGrath. She said that is “ironic that the seniors have four county titles.”
Ms. McGrath said that on Monday the team won its game against Randolph with a score of 15-8 as part of the state tournament.
”They are really playing well,” Ms. McGrath said. “They are passing the ball and scoring well.”
According to Ms. McGrath junior and midfielder Elle Hvozdovic scored seven goals with three assists, and scored the 100th goal of her lacrosse career in Monday’s game.
She said that Elle and senior Kelly O’Brien have both been huge contributors to the team’s success this year. Ms. McGrath also said that freshman and goalie Elizabeth Ruedemann played extremely well in the county finals.
During the pre-season, the team traveled to South Carolina and Virginia to “play some top competition” high schools in order to be prepared for the upcoming season, Ms. McGrath said.
”We feel like we’re a strong team in the GMC,” Ms. McGrath said. “We wanted to be prepared for our upcoming tournaments which were the county finals and the state tournament.”
According to Ms. McGrath the girls will be competing in the next round of the state tournament today, Thursday, at Columbia High School in Maplewood.
”They’ve had a great year,” Ms. McGrath said. “We wish to continue the success in the state (tournament) run.”
