MANVILLE: Senior Corner column, week of May 24

The Manville Senior Citizens meet at 12:30 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at the VFW on Washington Avenue. The club is comprised of people who are residents of Manville, age 60 or older, and age 55, if disabled.
Canned goods or nonperishable food items will continue to be collected before each meeting as well as soup labels. Bring one item per member to help stock the Food Bank.
Blood pressure screening is held before the beginning of each meeting for members.
The annual picnic will be at Falcons Camp on Thursday, June 28, from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets at $5 for members and $10 for guests will be on sale at meetings today and June 14.
Tax Collector Lisa Gerickont reminded everyone to fill out the form for the Homestead Rebate (Green Book), which will be applied to your taxes for 2013. It will be issued as a credit.
Ed Komoroski said another Tech Night will be held in October or November as the May 3 class said they would like to enhance what they have learned. The May session was a one-on-one and we were able to get help with specific questions, be it programs, Internet, setting up e-mails or finding short cuts.
Thank you to the MHS Student Council and the Manville Municipal Alliance for this personalized instruction from these knowledgeable students.
It’s amazing how much information is out there and what the students know and can do. I, as an attendee, came away with a better prospective of the computer and more confidence in working with the programs.
Ed also discussed the Manville Education Foundations fundraiser Duck Race. The proceeds will be used for grants for activities and scholarships. The event takes place on June 9 at Royce Book and the ducks are $3 each. Community Day will be either Sept. 22 or 29 with more information to come.
Department of Public Works Director Phil Petrone reminded everyone of the grass drop on Saturdays and that in July the department will be changing the Tuesday schedule for brush and bulk to an alternating schedule. Residents will be notified of the changes.
A special thank you to the MHS Key Club and Manville PTA for hosting the fabulous Senior Citizen Prom on Friday, April 20, at the MHS gymnasium.
It was a fun evening of great music by DJ Bill Forke from Sparks Entertainment for your dancing pleasure, a wonderful buffet and exceptional decorations.
This year our first King, Pete Keller, and Queen, Pat Zangaro, were crowned. This event just gets better and better each year and is one of our favorite activities, especially the interaction with the students. It seems the students loved doing this.
