After a hard-fought eight-inning, 3-2 victory over his alma mater, Watchung Hills, Coach Norm Hewitt secured his 600th win as a high school coach.
Hewitt admits he wasn’t thinking about win No. 600 during the last inning of the game; he just wanted to get his team to the next round of state play.
Senior outfielder Pat Roberts said Mr. Hewitt is always in school despite retiring from teacher. “He is easily approachable and always checking up on our grades,” he said.
Senior shortstop Mackey Price, talked about how involved Mr. Hewitt is off the field. He cares more about our performance off the field than he does on it, he said.
Mr. Hewitt taught at Hillsborough High School for 30 years. He said what makes coaching here so special is that the town is his home
The coach takes a great sense of pride in his work and the relationships he has formed with his teams throughout his coaching career.
”I owe this game everything,” he said. “The people I’ve met and the kids I have coached I’ve watched them go on to so many magnificent things, it’s unbelievable.”
”It’s cool to witness a big milestone,” Mackey said. “It is nice to see him rewarded after giving so much of himself.”
