HILLSBOROUGH: ‘Idea Factory’ author to speak at library

Book is about innovation era at Bell Labs

   At 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, Jon Gertner will talk about his book, “The Idea Factory,” a narrative that dissects the history of New Jersey’s Bell Labs, the incubator and center of America’s innovative brilliance of the last century.
   Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
   The library’s summer reading club registration begins Monday, June 18. Readers of all ages will “explore the night” this summer.
   Reading clubs to be offered are:
   • ”Read with Me” preschool club (birth through age 4),
   • ”Dream Big — Read” club (for kids entering kindergarten through grade 5),
   • ”Own the Night” teen club (entering grades 6 through 12), and
   • ”Between the Covers” adult club (18 and older).
   Registration begins on June 18 and ends on Saturday, Sept. 8. Participants will take part in raffles, trivia questions and activities throughout the summer. Stop by the youth or adult services desks to join.
   The adult summer reading club, with a theme of “Between the Covers,” kicks off Friday, June 22, at 1:30 p.m.
   On June 18, staff librarians will introduce the process of the Summer Reading Club, suggested reading and club prizes. Kathryn Weidener, a local storyteller, will tell a story on the club theme.
   ’Upcoming programs intended for adults. Registration is required:
   • Book discussion — The Friends of the Library will talk about “The Confession” by John Grisham on Tuesday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m.
   • Friday night movie — “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol,” starring Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner, will be shown June 15 at 7 p.m.
   • Chinese tea culture — Tea means lifestyle, customs and a combined social process of learning, planting and using tea.Jeanette Yu will talk about the art of drinking tea, types of tea and health benefits. There will be a tea tasting; bring your own cup! Saturday, June 16, at 2 p.m.
   • Computer courses — Part one of Introduction to Microsoft Word 2007 will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 18, followed by part one of Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2007 at 3:30 p.m. Part two of both courses will be held the following week at the same times.
   Registration is required for classes. The library has a limited number of laptops for patrons to use during the class, so register early if you need to use one. Patrons may also bring their own laptops, or just watch the presentation.

Teen movie afternoon (grades 6-12) — Watch “Hugo” (rated PG). Snacks will be provided. Saturday, June 16, from 2 to 4 p.m.
   • Garden club crafting (grades 2-5) — Join the members of the Neshanic Garden Club and create wind chimes. Wednesday, June 20, at 4 p.m.
