HILLSBOROUGH: Pizza shop raises funds to fight kids’ cancer

Papa John’s Pizza in Hillsborough will host a coin collection for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for the month of June.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex said she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer.
It is estimated that 12,500 children in the United States develop cancer every year and about 2,500 of those children will not survive.
To donate, people are invited to stop by Papa John’s at 706 Route 206 (next to Walgreen’s), Hillsborough, or 100 Reaville Ave., Flemington, and toss spare change in the collection jar. Donations may also be made online at http://www.alexslemonade.org/mypage/83908.
Another way for the community — particularly children — to participate is to organize their own lemonade stand during the 8th Annual National Lemonade Days, June 8 to 10. Registrations can be completed at: http://www.alexslemonade.org/campaign/national-lemonade-days.
If customers indicate a local Papa John’s as their referrer when the registration asks “How Did You Hear About Us?” the cause will receive a $25 donation from Volvo.
John and Karen Moretti, the owners of Papa John’s Pizza in Hillsborough and Flemington, have a history of giving back to the community as well.
”We learned at an early age as EMTS and firefighters that helping someone in need fosters an unbelievably rewarding feeling,” said Mr. Moretti. “Our teams at our restaurants and our customers are compassionate people. When we participated in the Toys for Tots program last November and December, our donation boxes were overflowing. We knew we could do wonders for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, too.”
