MANVILLE: Pizza shop helps rescue squad with fundraiser

By Mary Ellen Zangara, Special Writer
Manville Pizza held a fundraiser in May to help Manville First Aid & Rescue Squad recover from the flooding from last summer’s Hurricane Irene. The squad had severe damage to its building and emergency supplies housed in the building were lost.
”It is kind of a model of the fire department’s fundraiser for the flood victims,” said squad 1st Lt. Robyn Barb. “I talked to Anthony (D’Aniello), the owner, about it a couple of months ago and he was more than willing to help out. He set it up to go from 5-8 with some of the proceeds going to the Manville Rescue Squad.”
There was also a drawing for first aid supplies during the three hours. Member Laura Toth bought all the first aid items for the drawing by using her own money as a way to thank the pizza shop for supporting the rescue squad.
”It was kind of a giveback to the community, just to say thank you,” Ms. Barb said.
The members have been rebuilding and all the money spent will be for buying new equipment and renewing the equipment that was lost.
Over at the squad building on South Third Avenue, a new floor has been put in, as well as new carpeting and kitchen cabinets.
”We are going to use the money to get supplies and rebuild our building,” said Ms. Barb.
The Manville Rescue Squad is a 100 percent volunteer organization and is the primary EMS provider for Manville on weekends on 24 hours and at night during the week, said 2nd Lt. Steve Priaka. “Because we are funded 100 percent by donations, fundraisers like this is a very important source that we can use for supplies, improving the equipment and to train all our members so that they can provide you with the best EMS care,” he said.
