MATAWAN — The students at Ravine Drive Elementary School won first place in the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) Read Across NJ Contest, which took place over a three-month period this school year.

Ravine Drive was awarded a Radio Disney AM 640 Road Crew Appearance with special guest Mickey Mouse on May 18, according to a press release from the school.

The school has been participating in the contest for the past four years and has ranked in second and third place. This year, students earned first place among schools throughout New Jersey by reading more than 57,084 books.

Teachers Tara Barry and Amanda Andriola, as well as Debbie Morillo, school librarian, worked closely with homeroom teachers to help students maintain monthly reading logs to record books each student read.

Principal Patricia Janover said parents also provided support by encouraging their children to read each night and adding to their reading logs.

According to the press release, the reading contest helped build each student’s love for reading and introduced them to many new authors.

The students celebrated their win with an assembly on May 18hosted by the Radio Disney AM 640 Road Crew.
