The Hillsborough Maroon boys’ baseball team completed a Memorial Day weekend tournament sweep with a 12-3 victory over Easton, Pa., in the championship game of the 10-and-under baseball tournament held in Flemington. The victory gave the team a 5-0 record in the three-day competition.
”We really had total team victories, with different kids stepping up each game,” manager Rich Wolff said. “Our pitching was really good, and our hitting was outstanding.”
Hillsborough used seven pitchers to limit the opposition to 24 total hits over the five games. Evan Sapirman, Garrett Smith, Michael Fox, Milan Jain and Jake Ford each pitched well during the round-robin part of the tournament, with Andrew Rygiel and Abdullah Ahmad closing out the championship game in dominating fashion.
”Our catchers, Jordan Yusko and Jaden Bailey, really did a fantastic job keeping the other teams from running. They kept force plays intact, which really took pressure off our defense,” said coach Rick Ford.
Hillsborough outscored the opposition, 77-26, over the weekend.
”Averaging over 15 runs per game is really amazing,” said Wolff.
Leading the Hillsborough team in hitting were Jason Wolff, Rygiel and Fox, all of whom had games with multiple extra-base hits. In addition, Ford, Jain, Ahmad and Sapirman each had key hits during the playoff run.
”The team really played hard for teammate Noah Moshvin, who couldn’t make the games. Noah’s dad is currently serving our country in Afghanistan, and we thank him and all of our soldiers, especially during the Memorial Day weekend,” Wolff said.
