MANVILLE: Police blotter, week of June 4-10

   At 11:22 a.m. June 4 Manville High School Vice Principal Steve Venuto reported an incident in which a 60-year-old man made allegedly harassing comments to a 17-year-old boy. Patrols spoke to the man.

   Halayna L. Koehn, 18, of Manville was arrested and charged with theft of items worth $212.56 at Walmart, store officials charged at 1:29 p.m. June 4. Bail was set at $500. Ms. Koehn also faced a previous $250 warrant and was taken to county jail in default of the $750.

   Lt. John Crater reported at 3:11 p.m. June 4 that he had Anthony Laeyt, 27, of Manville, and Christopher Lojun, 19, whose last known address was Hillsborough, under arrest for burglary and theft on May 23. They allegedly took an X-Box, valued at $300, and a laptop computer, valued at $600. The two suspects were charged and taken to Somerset County Jail that evening.

   A Walmart employee reported an alleged shoplifter at 5:02 p.m. June 4. Patrols arrested and charged Valerie L. Cobb, 42, whose last known address was Manville. She was released after processing.

   A visitor to headquarters at 5:47 p.m. June 4 said that a man’s wedding ring had been stolen, and a female’s engagement ring was damaged, at 2 p.m. June 1 on North 5th Avenue. The value of the loss was estimated at $840. An investigation is under way.

   A caller reported that a man got out of a black Mercedes that parked in her driveway and looked through the garage windows at 7:36 p.m. June 4. Patrols checked the area but found no one.

   Bridgewater police reported at 8:21 p.m. that two men had used stolen credit cards there and believed the two were headed to Manville’s Walmart to use them. Patrols checked but saw nothing like the reported purple van with temporary tags.

   Black graffiti was spray painted on the walls of the South Arlington pump station, a DPW worker reported at 7:39 a.m. June 5.

   A caller came into headquarters at 9:45 a.m. June 5 to report that she was attacked by a dog the previous day but was uninjured. She said she confronted the dog’s owner, who lives on North 2nd Avenue, who verbally threatened her. She was advised of her right to sign complaints but didn’t wish to do so at the time.

   An East Frech Avenue woman came to headquarters at 4:28 p.m. June 5 to say she had lost her green card in Piscataway sometime in April. She was advised to contact immigration officials.

   A woman called at 6:35 p.m. June 5 to say she had placed books at West Camplain Road and South 9th Avenue and when she returned from the bank they were missing. Patrols responded, retrieved the items and returned them to her.

   Police secured an open door to an abandoned Boesel Avenue home at 8:07 p.m. June 5.

   Adesa Auto Auction reported a recovered stolen 2009 Toyota truck at the business at 9:19 a.m. June 6. Police found the truck had been repossessed and sent teletypes to New York City police.

   Patrolman William Sampson assisted Norfolk Southern police in picking up Clay Kuhlman, 41, of Manville at 10:10 a.m. June 6 for alleged trespassing. County officers, who wanted Mr. Kuhlman on other matters, came to pick him up.

   An anonymous caller at 1 p.m. June 6 said an illegal day care center was being run out of a Washington Avenue house. Police notified Zoning Officer Walt Wilczek.

   An East Camplain Road man called at 3:36 p.m. June 6 to say he had found money in front of his home. Patrols responded and reported the man will hold onto the money and check with his family.

   A North 2nd Avenue woman called at 7:44 p.m. June 6 that a large group of young skateboarders had left garbage in Louis Street near Christ the King Church. She said they were there every day between 3 and 6 p.m.

   A Brooks Boulevard man came to headquarters at 6:36 a.m. June 7 to say he believed prescription medicine may have been stolen from his 1995 Nissan Quest. Police spoke to the man, who said he thought 120 pills of Xanax, 179 pills of roxycotin and Adderall were lost between New Brunswick and Manville.

   Patrolman Nick Franzoso issued a jaywalking summons on North Main Street at 7:26 a.m. June 7.

* * *

   Patrolman William Sampson reported at 8:57 a.m. that he had taken Yasmeen Evans, 31, of Plainfield into custody on warrants and for allegedly shoplifting a comforter valued at $49.88 from the Walmart on North Main Street on May 4. She was turned over to the Somerset County Jail on a Union County sheriff’s warrant and several municipal warrants. Bail was set at $3,000 for shoplifting, resisting, hindering, obstruction and simple assault. The rescue squad was dispatched to headquarters for an arm injury to Ms. Evans, but she refused medical attention.
   Related to the same May 4 incident, at 3:19 p.m. June 7 Patrolman Sampson charged Janay Bell, 21, of Manville with hindering and obstruction. She was released after paperwork was completed.

   Police reported a theft from a parked 1998 Toyota in a North Main Street lot at 12:41 p.m. June 7. Police reported theft of a brown bag containing a GPS unit, blood pressure medication, a radar detector and the title to the vehicle. The value of items taken was put at $200.

   A man came to headquarters at 2:19 p.m. June 7 to get a state DEP permit to possess an accidentally killed deer that the man said was struck on the Manville border but died in the borough.

   Sgt. Paul Meixner and Patrolman Todd Widitz went to Bernardsville at 7:43 p.m. June 7 for a SWAT callout for a reported armed barricaded man.

   An anonymous caller at 9:09 p.m. June 7 reported a possible burglary in progress on North Reading Street. ’The homeowner was contacted and said that $400 in change was missing. Later, Sgt. Ron Gazaway reported arresting Michael Herasymchuck, 35, of Hillsborough and charging him with burglary, theft and unlawful lawful possession of a weapon. Bail was set at $75,000 and he was taken to county jail in default.

   A caller from the Department of Corrections at 10 p.m. June 7 asked for an officer’s help on South 18th Avenue. Patrols arrested Wayne Zuraski, 45, of Manville, for DWI and the vehicle was towed.

   A woman came to headquarters at 12:25 p.m. June 8 to report that her tenant on North 13th Avenue took a cast iron boiler and copper piping, worth a total of $400. Police will investigate.

   Caller reported seeing a red burn on the chest of a 3-year-old at Weston School at 1:36 p.m. June 8. School officials contacted DYFS and patrols contacted the mother, who said the child has sunburn and provided a note from a doctor, who corroborated it.

   Police spoke to a man pumping sewage from a building into St. John Street at 6 p.m. June 8. The Board of Health was contacted and the fire department was on scene.

   Patrols removed and sent on their way four juveniles from CSX Railroad property for trespassing at 12:44 p.m. June 9.

   Responding to abandoned 9-1-1 calls from South Main Street at 3:16 p.m. June 9, police contacted the owner who said an irate customer had left the area over $12 owed on a dress.

   An unknown caller reported an inverted kayak in the Millstone River behind Rhythm’s at 4 p.m. June 9. Patrols responded and the kayak was retrieved from the river. The squad was dispatched for a man with a foot injury.

   A caller reported noise from several people playing basketball at Weston School at 11:10 p.m. June 9. The group was breaking up as police arrived.

* * *

   A caller said he saw a man trying to go through a rear window at Foxtail’s on South Street at 2:44 a.m. June 10. Detective Craig Jeremiah responded and found there had been an entry. Investigation is to continue.

   At 6:32 a.m. June 10 a South Main Street caller said he found a broken front window when he opened for business. The incident happened after 11:30 the previous night, he said. Estimated damage was $200.

   At 8:22 a.m. June 10 a Chevy Suburban was reported scratched on the passenger side on Czaplicki Street around 3 a.m. Damage was put at about $200.

   Someone deflated two tires on a Dodge Durango outside on a North 7th Avenue address, a caller reported at 2 p.m. June 10.

* * *

   At 3:25 p.m. June 10 East Orange police asked police here to contact a Green Street man about a bank check in his name found in a backpack in their town. Police talked to a roommate who said he would reach out for the man.

   A 19-year-old Manville man on Dominic Street called at 11:35 p.m. to report being assaulted and $60 cash taken from his pocket. Patrols responded. The man refused medical attention and he was taken to headquarters to make a statement. Detective Jeremiah responded.

   Police checked on a report of a suspicious woman in a South Main Street backyard at 14 minutes past midnight into June 11. Patrols reported the woman claimed she was a previous tenant and there to collect her flower pots.
