On Friday, June 16, 2012 Go Soccer FC Men’s team defeated the Sport Club Portuguese of Newark, NJ to become the Garden State Soccer League’s 2012 Super-Division Champions. While the Sport Club Portuguese was one point ahead of Go Soccer FC in the standings going into the Finals, the teams were evenly matched. The score was 1-1 after 90 minutes of play at the Rutgers Sports Complex, requiring overtime to decide the champion. Go Soccer FC scored two overtime goals and clinched the title. Go Soccer FC’s goals were scored by Chase Barbieri (Edgardo Alfaro, assist), Edgardo Alfaro (Dennis Maldanado, assist), Colin Gumbiner (Dominic Paolella, assist).
Captain Chad Barbieri credits the superb playing of Mike Mohr (GK), Bryan Davis, Mike Iovichinni, Colin Gumbiner, Anthony Starpoli, and Matt Heitmann with containing the Portuguese offense and allowing only one goal. The game was the third matchup of these two powerhouses with the Portuguese taking both prior games.
GSSL President Pat Varsallona was on hand to present the trophy to team captain Chad Barbieri and Coaches Ray O’Hagan and James Watson. Go Soccer FC is sponsored by Somerset Medical Center’s Sports Performance Center and is a full-service soccer organization based in Bridgewater, NJ.
