Freehold High School students Tad Cordle, David Goldman, Kevin Jin and Thomas Mezaros were among a team of students who won a recent American Computer Science League (ACSL) allstar competition held at West Chester East High School in Pennsylvania.
The FHS team placed first in the Senior 5 Division, the largest and most prominent in a contest involving schools from across the United States, Europe and Asia, according to information provided by the Freehold Regional High School District.
“We scored 58 out of 60 points in the programming part of the competition and 54 out of 60 points in the short answer test on computer science topics, for a total of 112 points,” FHS teacher and adviser James Gill said. “We tied with a team from Croatia and won the contest on a built-in tiebreaker.”
“We are very proud that we achieved first place against very prominent schools, including Thomas Jefferson High School from Virginia, High Technology High School from Monmouth County, and Bergen County Academies in Hackensack. We also beat out Poolesville High School and Montgomery Blair High School, both from Maryland, and Lexington High School from Massachusetts,” said computer science supervisor Joseph Iacullo.
The contest consisted of four other competitions that were held throughout the school year. The FHS team earned a championship with a perfect score of 200 in the Northern Division, which led them to their victory in the all-star competition.
