Summer reading club registration has begun. Readers of all ages will “explore the night” this summer, with club activities ending Sept. 8.
Participants will take part in raffles, trivia questions and activities throughout the summer. Stop by the Youth or Adult Services Desk to join.
Reading clubs offered are:
• ”Read with Me” preschool club (birth through age 4, with caregiver) The kickoff is at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 27. Wear your pajamas to match the “sweet dreams” theme with stories, adventures, games and crafts. One older sibling is welcome to attend.
• ”Dream Big — Read” school-age club (entering kindergarten through grade 5).
The kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 27. Vinnie Reo and his sidekick Saffire the Wolf will help dispel the myth of the Big Bad Wolf. Children and parents/caregivers will learn about pack life, communication, and the future of the wolf in the Yellowstone area. Children can meet Saffire and learn how she was raised. Saffire is gentle and will be on-leash.
No toddlers or children in strollers will be allowed in.
• ”Own the Night” teen club (entering grades 6 through 12), and
• ”Between the Covers”adult club (18 and older). This program kicks off Friday, June 22, at 1:30 p.m.

’Upcoming programs intended for adults. Registration is required:
• Chinese tea culture — Tea means lifestyle, customs and a combined social process of learning, planting and using tea. It has its own philosophy. Jeanette Yu will talk about the art of drinking tea, types of tea and health benefits. There will be a Chinese tea tasting, so bring your own cup. Saturday, June 16, at 2 p.m.
• Computer courses — Part two of Introduction to Microsoft Word 2007 will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 25, followed by part two of Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2007 at 3:30 p.m.
An Intro to Facebook class will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 28. What exactly does it mean when someone writes on my wall?
An Intro to Gmail e-mail class will be held June 28 at 7 p.m. Attendees are requested to sign up for a free Gmail account at www.gmail.com prior to the class.
A class to show you how to use online resources to find your next great read will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 28.
Registration is required for classes. The library has a limited number of laptops for patrons to use during the class, so register early if you need to use one. Patrons may also bring their own laptops, or just watch the presentation.
• Self-defense for women — Lisa Gilmurray of the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office teaches basic self-defense moves and discusses safe practices and awareness. An invaluable class for women of all ages, especially for women entering college and/or living on their own. Wear comfortable clothing; the class involves physical activity — standing as well as on the ground. This program is open to women ages 17 and older. Monday, June 25, at 7 p.m.
• Afternoon movies — “One for the Money,” based on the book by Janet Evanovich and starring Katherine Heigl, Jason O’Mara and Daniel Sunjata, will be shown Tuesday, June 26, at 1:30 p.m.
”The Artist,” winner of the Academy Award for best picture and starring Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo and John Goodman, will be offered Wednesday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m.
• Photo Tips for Better Pics — Photographer and author Walter Choroszewski brings his expertise and humor for an informal back-to-basics digital photo class. Part three of a series. Tuesday, June 26, at 7 p.m.
• Indian cooking — Learn how different aromatic spices make this cuisine so tasty and satisfying. A $3 fee is required at the door. Thursday, July 5, at 7 p.m.
• Friday night movie — “The Artist, the Oscar-winning film for best picture. July 6 at 7 p.m.
Here are programs for youngsters. Registration is required.
• Summer volunteer sign-ups have begun. Teens entering grades 8-12 in the fall and who are looking for a way to earn community service hours can pick up an application to volunteer at the library this summer.
• Garden club craft (grades 2-5) — Join the members of the Neshanic Garden Club and create wind chimes. Wednesday, June 20, at 4 p.m.
• Decorate a T-shirt (for those entering grades K-5) — Celebrate the beginning of the summer reading program, “Dream Big, Read!” You bring a T-shirt and we’ll provide stencils and fabric markers. Cotton/poly blends work best. No registration required. Drop in any time between 3 and 4:45 p.m. Thursday, June 28. Program ends at 5 p.m.
• Cosmic Tie-Dye (entering grades 6-12) — Bring a black cotton T-shirt to make a cosmic creation using the bleach method. This project is not limited to shirts; feel free to bring dark socks, pillowcases, tote bags, etc.
Note: We will be using diluted bleach. Wear clothes that you would not mind getting stained. Saturday, July 7, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
