Joseph ”Jay” Majka will miss his staff and friends in Hillsborough, but he won’t regret the drive.
The principal at Woodfern School has resigned to take a job at the head of the 270-pupil school district in Bradley Beach.
Instead of an 80-minute drive to work and as much as a two-hour grind home, Mr. Majka will have a 15- to 20-minute commute from his Point Pleasant home.
”The opportunity to work minutes from my home and be able to spend more time with my family is something so precious, I could not let it pass,” he wrote in an open letter to staff and school community in June.
Mr. Majka has been with the district since April 2009, first as a vice principal at the high school and as Woodfern School principal for one year.
The resignation is effective Aug. 15, or sooner if a replacement is found. He assured parents and staffers that the transition to the new principal is complete and ensuring that everything is in order for the newschool year.
He said he “thoroughly loved” his time in Hillsborough, but his decision “was in the best interest of my family, and it is absolutely the right decision,” he said.
