MANVILLE: Police blotter, week of June 18-24

   Megim Berisha, 18, of Manville was arrested, charged with simple assault and released on $2,500 cash bail after police responded to a call about a fight in the area of East Camplain Avenue and North Reading Street at 2:45 p.m. June 18. A 16-year-old Manville boy’s injuries were treated by the rescue squad.

   Lawrence Marzigliano came to headquarters at 2:58 p.m. June 18 to say he had received a $2,000 bad check from a South Reading Street man for electrical work he performed. Patrolman David Sheffrin was to investigate.

   A caller at 6:22 p.m. June 18 reported finding five abandoned kittens along the tracks on South Street. Animal control was contacted.

* * *

   Kids put a banner on top of the water tower on North 9th Avenue and it was dripping spray paint on his vehicle, a caller reported at 8:19 p.m. June 18. Police responded and said all paint was removed from the vehicle with damage.

   A man came to headquarters at 11:20 p.m. June 18 to say he believed that someone was using his identity and Social Security number. Starting about four months ago, he said, he began receiving bills — one being a credit card charge for $1,014 — with another person’s name. The incident was entered into the national crime computers but more information was need from the man, police said.

   A caller reported that two men wearing jeans were banging their fists on the ticket window of the Reading Cinema at 4:43 a.m. June 19. No one was there when police arrived.

   At 8:27 a.m. June 19 Principal Michael Magliacano of Roosevelt School asked for a well-being check on an 11-year-old East Camplain Road boy who had been absent from school for the last 10 days. Patrols went to the house and spoke to his mother, who said he had gone back to South America for the summer. The school was advised.

   A North Main Street man reported finding a stray pregnant cat at 12:52 p.m. June 19. Animal control was contacted.

* * *

   Children were reported playing on top of scaffolding in the area of West Camplain and South 6th avenues at 2:53 p.m. June 19. Patrols didn’t find anyone.

* * *

   A South Main Street woman said her next-door neighbor had set up tiki torches too close to an umbrella and a telephone pole at 9:07 p.m. June 19. The torches were extinguished before police arrived.

   At 5:08 a.m. June 20 patrols removed clear plastic wrap and signs from the Manville High School parking lot. (Editor’s note: It was graduation day.)

   A worker at Delilah’s nightclub on Washington Avenue said at noon June 20 that a woman named Michelle was an unwanted guest in the business begging for money. She was gone by the time police arrived.

* * *

   A Whalen Street man called at noon June 20 to say he had a raccoon in his yard. Animal control advised leaving the animal alone.

* * *

   A South Main Street woman reported at 5:32 p.m. June 20 a suspicious incident involving missing items. Police spoke to the woman and will follow up.

   Sgt. Jeffery Petrone reported at 5:46 a.m. June 21 that, after deploying a message board sign at North Main Street and Brooks Boulevard, he hit a metal park bench with the rear passenger door of the patrol car.

   A South Bank Street man came to headquarters at 9:57 a.m. June 21 to say he was receiving harassing cell phone calls. He was advised to have his call provider block the number.

   An East Frech Avenue man reported at noon June 21 that a tractor-trailer ripped the telephone wire from his residence. Police logged the motor vehicle accident.

* * *

   A North 9th Avenue woman said a dog was tied to a tree at a home at corner of South 8th and Washington avenues without water at 8:26 p.m. June 21. Patrols said it did have water and shelter, but animal was out in the heat. Animal shelter responded and said the dog was fine. The owner took the dog inside.

   An anonymous caller reported kids on swings in Papawick Park and talking loudly at 11:10 p.m. June 21. Police moved the group out of the park.

* * *

   A Huff Avenue man reported at 5:32 a.m. Friday that he had received several phone calls from an unknown person who had threatened to harm the man’s family. Patrols told the man to monitor calls and make a report with the phone company.

* * *

   At 7:11 a.m. Friday caller reported the theft of his gray 2009 Toyota, valued at $26,000, from a South Bank Street address. It was logged into the national crime registry and a county alarm was issued.

   A West Camplain Road came to headquarters at noon Friday to report that, sometime since Sunday, someone took a green BMX bike from her driveway and left a green boy’s 20-inch bicycle, which police took and put into storage.

   An alarm company reported an activated fire alarm in the basement of a Kennedy Boulevard home at 4 p.m. Friday. The homeowner called to report the alarm accident, and caused by his smoking cigar.

   County communications reported a person being pulled out of a stopped vehicle under the LVRR underpass at 6:46 p.m. Friday. Patrols checked but couldn’t find a car or person fitting the report.

* * *

   A pedestrian was hit by a motor vehicle on Dakota Street at 5:34 p.m. Friday. A 49-year-old North Orchard Street man was taken to Somerset Medical Center.

   A West Camplain Road woman called at 10:07 p.m. Friday to say she brought in a cat that was without cat food inside her house. Police advised her to take it back outside.

* * *

   A caller reported a raccoon hit by a vehicle on East Camplain Road at 10:20 a.m. Saturday. Sgt. Paul Meixner found the animal had died and disposed of it.

* * *

   A caller at 5:54 p.m. Saturday said a man and woman were involved in lewd behavior in Duke’s Park. Patrols responded and found the complaint unfounded, but told the two about the call.

* * *

   Toni M. Mendez, 28, of Old Bridge was charged with shoplifting from Walmart at 7:43 p.m. Saturday. Bail was set at $500 and she was released to a friend.

* * *

   Bridgewater police reported a hit-and-run on Dakota Street at 10:22 p.m. Saturday. Patrols found the vehicle and arrested Scott T. Orloff, 41, of Bound Brook for driving while being intoxicated. He was processed and released on his own recognizance.

   A Oasis Taxi driver called to say his patrons failed to pay for the cab fee at South 12th Avenue at 10:36 p.m. Saturday. Patrols responded and found the accused’s brother-in-law had made good on the debt.

   Between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. Sunday, police responded to complaints about separate loud parties on Gress Street, Griggs Place and Huff Avenue.

   A North 3rd Avenue man came to headquarters at 6:12 a.m. Sunday to say his female friend from Jersey City had his 1999 Lincoln without his consent. He was treated by Manville EMS for a possible head injury and left headquarters prior to giving all the info. It was entered on the record.

   A man came to headquarters at 1:36 p.m. Sunday to say a South Main Street woman had thrown away some of his belongings, which she had been storing for him. He valued the items at $200. He was advised of his rights and given a citizen complaint form. Two days earlier, the woman told police she was disposing of items which had been left for more than a year, she said.
