LAMBERTVILLE: Elks involved in several worthy projects

By John Tredrea, Special Writer
LAMBERTVILLE — The Lambertville Elks Lodge 1070 has been busy doing good things all over the Delaware Valley area lately.
Lodge members gave special dictionaries to elementary students, held a Flag Day ceremony with local Boy Scouts at the Lambertville Elks Lodge on June 14, and sponsored “Batter Up,” a baseball-hitting contest that’s one of the Elks’ Youth Activity Programs.
The well-attended Flag Day ceremony brought together local Boy Scout Troop 49 and Elks members Thomas Hood (Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge 1070), Clark McAvoy, James Cavallo, William Hood, Robert Vasey, Ronald DiSalvi and Frederick Orfe.
The Scouts’ respect for patriotic values also brought out Donald Acorn, who made a donation to Troop 49 on behalf of Americanism, an organization he chairs.
Exalted Ruler Hood said: “For our ‘Gift of Words’ dictionary project, we recently handed out more than 80 copies of ‘A Student’s Dictionary’ to four third-grade classes at Gayman Elementary School in Doylestown.”
Mr. Hood noted that Elks Grand Exalted Ruler David R. Carr is a “staunch supporter of this project, with the goal that all third-graders in the United States receive a copy of ‘A Student’s Dictionary.’”
Gayman Elementary students sent the Elks more than 80 thank-you notes for the dictionaries.
On June 17, the Lambertville Elks were on the scene in Belle Mead for “Batter Up,” another Elks’ Youth Activity Program. Winners advance to district, regional, state and national “Batter Up” finals.
