Area Rock Duo Gaining a Following and Making Noise

By Rafe Gomez
Resin Gypsy, a heavy blues duo featuring two area teens, is building a fan base with their powerful performances and well-received CD releases and downloads.
The band is comprised of 18 year-old guitarist/vocalist Dre DiMura of North Brunswick, and 20 year-old drummer Kaleen Reading of Lawrenceville.  Their forceful yet melodic sound has been compared to such legendary bands as Cream, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath.
“We’re a duo that plays the kind of music which is usually handled by a four-piece group,” says Dre.  “To compensate, I’m playing the guitar in a way that combines the rhythm parts, bass, and also leads and solos.  It’s challenging, but the result is very innovative and sounds like nothing that our fans have heard before.”
The two musicians met in 2008 at School of Rock Princeton, where both were taking music lessons.  They were participated in the School’s Performance Program, where they first performed together in a tribute to classic heavy metal, and later in concerts at B.B Kings in Manhattan and The World Café in Philadelphia as part of the School’s touring All-Star band.  Realizing that they had similar musical tastes and ideas, Dre and Kaleen formed Resin Gypsy in January 2012 and began writing songs together, crafting their stage show, and developing an audience for their unique and energetic approach.
"Resin Gypsy is terrific,” says Don Jamieson, co-host VH1’s “That Metal Show”.  “It makes me happy to hear something so well done, original, and creative – but with a real old school type of vibe."
Along with having an album for sale on such leading music retail sites CD Baby, CD Universe, iTunes, Resin Gypsy has also made inroads with live appearances.  They’ve done recent shows at Walla Fest in Norristown, PA, UACA Hall in Philadelphia, and Crossroads in Garwood, NJ, where they opened for critically acclaimed heavy metal band Anvil.  They also have an upcoming show at The Fire in Philadelphia on August 5 at 8:00PM.
“Our live shows aren’t exact duplications of what we do in the studio,” says Dre.  “They have a jam feel to them, and they give us a chance to stretch out the songs with solos and new sections that take on a life of their own.”
When not performing, recording, or working on Resin Gypsy-related business, Dre works as a guitar instructor at School of Rock Princeton.  Kaleen keeps a busy touring schedule as the drummer in Misstallica, an “all chick Metallica tribute band”.
