A family moving into the house at 431 Ewing St. in Princeton never even finished unpacking before they lost their new home to a fire on fire Saturday afternoon.
The family was moving in when their son noticed their vacuum cleaner, which was outside and running, was on fire. The homeowner tried to put out the fire with a garden hose but by that time the fire had spread to the house.
At approximately 3:14 p.m., Princeton Township police and fire departments from Princeton, Lawrence, Hopewell, Plainsboro, Montgomery, Robbinsville and Princeton Plasma Physics responded to the scene.
The fire was under control in a little under an hour, according to police.
No injuries were reported, but the house sustained heavy fire damage and was deemed uninhabitable by the fire marshal.
The cause is being investigated by the Princeton Township Police Department and the Princeton Bureau of Fire Safety and Housing Inspection.
