A two-alarm fire Tuesday night in the Deans Pond development off George’s Road destroyed one house and significantly damaged two others, displacing as many as eight people.
“(The fire) took off very quick,” Sgt. James Ryan said, standing across the street from the still smoking shell of 30 Revere Road.
The four family members residing in the house had just returned home around 9:50 p.m. and discovered the fire in the living room, according to Sgt. Ryan.
When police arrived the family was safely outside the structure and the fire was already working through the home, spreading out of the rear windows and backside of the property as firefighters also arrived on the scene.
“The roof collapsed on the structure,” Sgt. Ryan said. “Two other homes, 28 and 32, were also significantly damaged.
Sgt. Ryan said that 28 Revere Road was not habitable and that the fire displaced eight people from both structures.
All three fire departments from South Brunswick, Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park and Kingston fought the blaze as well as units from North Brunswick and Jamesburg, according to Sgt. Ryan.
No one was injured during the fire, which took about 25 minutes to get under control, Sgt. Ryan said.
Monmouth Junction EMS was also on the scene treating firefighters during the incident.
Sgt. Ryan said township fire marshals and police detectives are investigating the cause of the blaze.
He also said the fire started inside the home and investigators do not think it began from an outside source like fireworks.
Neighbor Avinash Gaje, 48, a computer consultant who lives at 1 Revere Road, praised firefighters and police on the scene.
“The firemen and police should be congratulated on the way they handled the situation,” Mr. Gaje said. “They protected the houses on both sides.”
Mr. Gaje said he first heard his dog barking and then saw two police cars speeding up the road and knew it must have been some kind of emergency.
He said he came outside of his home when he saw fire trucks going down the street and then he saw the burning house.
“The fire was very big,” Mr. Gaje said. “I thought it might spread (through the development).”
Sgt. Ryan said firefighters would likely remain on the scene for some time into the night.
