SOUTH BRUNSWICK: No hits in Viking victory

The South Brunswick Black 11U baseball team won the 2012 Cal Ripken District 9 Championship shutting out a hitless East Brunswick Bears team 13-0 June 30.
The win brings the Vikings to its next goal, which is to participate in the 2012 Cal Ripken State Championships in Flemington.
This achievement comes on the heels of winning all four pool games against the Monroe Falcons, South Plainfield Bombers, Edison and East Brunswick Bears.
The team scored a combined total 39 runs and only gave up a total of 14 runs throughout all the games.
The pool games had solid pitching and fielding performances.
”The entire defense for the Vikings showed great composure and never thought twice about losing a game,” said manager Andrew Goldsmith.
The Vikings also had a solid hitting performance during pool play with four home runs and delivering 39 hits in four games while allowing only 15 hits.
The Vikings played the championship game against East Brunswick, who came off a fantastic win against North Brunswick in a playoff game the night before.
The Vikings got on the scoreboard early by putting four runs up quickly in the first inning and never looked back, delivering another five runs in the second inning and an additional six runs in the third inning.
The Vikings again had a solid pitching performance facing 12 batters in four innings, striking out six and not giving up a hit in the 13-0 victory, enforced by the mercy rule.
”For a group of 11-year old-athletes to play as hard as they did against some great competition shows they are true champions. The boys are having a blast, and there is a great camaraderie and cohesiveness across the team,” said manager Andrew Goldsmith. “This was a true all-out effort by all 12 of the boys and they are true champions.”
