PRINCETON: Black bear sighted in Princeton

By Jennifer Bradley, Staff Reporter
A juvenile black bear around 100 pounds was sighted last night and today in the Princeton area.
According to Mark Johnson, the Princeton animal control officer, the bear was most recently seen at noon by Quaker Road and Route 206. He has since disappeared into a patch of woods near Quaker Road.
”Since it’s the middle of the day and the hottest part, hopefully the bear will go to sleep and behave himself and get to where he needs to be,” said Mr. Johnson.
Tuesday night the animal was seen on Nassau Street, east of the downtown.
Mr. Johnson said the first sighting of the bear was near Dodds Lane. Animal control and the township police followed the bear and lost track of it near Route 27 at 9 p.m. last night. At 10:15 the bear was seen again in Princeton Borough.
Since the area where the bear was spotted was densely populated, Borough police did a reverse 911 call around 11 p.m.
According to Mr. Johnson, the bear was tagged, so fish and game have dealt with it before.
Residents are advised to take down bird feeders and take in kids and pets. Residents should also make sure all garbage cans are securely closed and should bring them in overnight.
Another young black bear was in Princeton about a month ago.
