Provides Preparation for Writing for the College Essay, Conducting Academic Research and Improving Creative Writing Talent
Seton Hall University (www.shu.edu), one of the country’s leading Catholic universities, is offering writing courses this summer as part of Seton Hall Summer Sessions, designed to help high school students sharpen and polish their writing skills as they prepare for the SAT and college entrance exams, develop best practices in conducting research and writing academic papers, and explore their passion for creativity.
The following courses are being offered:
Writing for College Summer Institute: Essay and Research July 16-20 n 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Concentration on two areas of writing skills will be offered in a combined course:
Essay: Prepares students for taking the SAT written section, writing the college entrance essay, and development of academic writing skills appropriate for the college level. Instructor feedback and commentary will be a strong component and students will experience taking practice tests, creating various written documents and will have completed a draft of their college essay by the conclusion of the course. Question and answer sessions with college admission counselors are also offered.
Research: Writing at the academic level is essential for success in college and is often an obstacle, particularly as students enter their freshman year. This course covers methods for developing research and evidence for academic papers, understanding the audience, how an argument is framed, the development of ideas, and the importance of revisions.
Creative Writing Summer Institute-Fiction July 16-20 n 9:00 a.m. n 4:00 p.m. Students have an opportunity to discover and improve their creative writing talent through this intensive and invaluable experience that helps them develop their skills and techniques as writers. Various genres of writing are explored and students will read and discuss classic works and meet and collaborate with students who share a passion for arts and communication.
All courses are taught by University professors within a beautiful campus setting and provide a rare hands-on opportunity for students to experience Seton Hall’s state-of-the-art facilities. Summer Sessions offer a balance of study and recreation and include fun activities such as field trips, museum visits, guest speakers, visits with college admissions counselors and much more.
Seton Hall is offering a variety of credit and non-credit courses during Summer Sessions through August 6. Credit courses include psychology, sociology, philosophy, intermediate algebra, economics and oral communications, and non-credit summer camps and institutes include subjects such as introduction to video game programming, social media, criminal justice, TV news camp and more.
To encourage youth to explore topics of interest and try multiple courses, the University is offering a select group of college-credit courses at 50% off their regular cost. For students who take more than one non-credit course, there is a $50 per course discount.
