MONGTOMERY Michael W. Diacont, 21, of Bridewater, was arrested on June 28 after allegedly speeding past spectators waiting for the town’s fireworks display while fleeing from a police cruiser.
Police Lt. Jim Curry said Mr. Diacont was driving south on Route 601 at approximately 94 mph at about 9:15 p.m. when an officer, who was driving in the opposite direction, turned around and put his flashing lights on.
Police said Mr. Diacont did not pull over and was driving recklessly and at a high speed along Route 601 and Skillman Road, which were lined with spectators waiting for the fireworks display to start.
Lt. Curry said there were no reports of Mr. Diacont almost hitting any of the spectators.
Lt. Curry said the officer shut off his lights when he saw Mr. Diacont heading toward the spectators and called ahead to the police at the fireworks display. He said the officers at the fireworks saw Mr. Diacont turn into a residential neighborhood off of Skillman Road and called the incident into patrolmen who were on duty at the time.
Lt. Curry was uncertain of how fast Mr. Diacont was driving in the neighborhood, but said that police had no reason to believe that he continued to drive at a high speed.
”He was still trying to evade capture not by use of speed, but by turning down the street and not being seen,” said Lt. Curry.
After the patrolmen were informed of the situation, they arrived in the neighborhood, where Mr. Diacont was stopped, according to police.
Lt. Curry was uncertain of how many patrolmen were there and said a roadblock was not used.
Mr. Diacont received summonses for eluding police, speeding, reckless driving, careless driving, view obstruction, unsafe tires, unapproved equipment and improper turns.
