Programs, activities set at senior center

A variety of upcoming programs will be offered at the Monroe Township Senior Center, 1 Municipal Plaza, Perrineville Road.

It is necessary to register in advance for all featured programs and activities. Individuals who are 55 years of age and older, who reside in Monroe Township and who are registered members of the Monroe Senior Center office are eligible to attend center events.

Seniors who have registered for a program and are then unable to attend should call the office at 732-521-6111 as soon as possible to cancel; this will enable other members to sign up.

Program information is featured in the monthly newsletter, “Senior Focus,” which is distributed on approximately the 15th of the previous month and is available on the township’s website, www.monroetwp.com.

“Let’s Wii!” is offered on select days of the month. Individuals may reserve their Wii-playing time. Center personnel will provide information on how to play “virtual style.”

“Healthy Bones Peer-Leader Training,” set for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 1 and 8, is available for those who have already participated in an “Advanced Healthy Bones” class. Peer leaders conduct classes and/or provide leadership substitution. For more information, call Jennifer at the center.

“Michael and Ted Present: Gwen Verdon” is planned for 2 p.m. Aug. 2. Michael and Ted, of WWFM’s The Classical Network, will explore the career of Gwen Verdon, who started out as a dancer and ended up with five major Broadway roles in shows including “Damn Yankees,” “Sweet Charity” and “Chicago.” Space is limited.

An AARP-sponsored “Driver’s Safety Program” to enhance skills and awareness will be offered at 8:45 a.m. Aug. 6. For availability, call the office.

“The Secret Life of the Brain,” a threepart DVD program provided by PBS Home Video, will be shown at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 6, 13 and 20. The series first takes a look at the development of a baby’s brain, leading to childhood. It then explores the workings of the teenage brain. Finally, the adult and aging brain is examined.

“David Foster and Friends,” a DVD concert featuring David Foster’s famous friends including Andrea Bocelli, Kenny G and Celine Dion, is set for 1 p.m. Aug. 6. Space is limited.

August Movies of the Month will be “Certified Copy,” 1 p.m., Aug. 7, a romantic drama with Juliette Binoche; “We Bought a Zoo,” 1 p.m., Aug. 20, starring Matt Damon; “Coriolanus,” 1 p.m., Aug. 30, a suspense drama in which Shakespeare meets the modern world, starring Ralph Fiennes.

“Pain Management” will be the topic at 2 p.m. Aug. 8. Lynn Lutwin, R.N., of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, will offer information on how to manage chronic pain from arthritis to fibromyalgia.

Mike Ferreira will present the last episode in the DVD series “Mysteries of the Renaissance” 1:30 p.m. Aug. 10. In the final installment, “The Dissenter,” re-enactments bring to life the struggles of Jan Hus, John Wyclif, Martin Luther and others who challenged authority.
