A school district employee was able to stop a fight in the baseball field of Crossroads south Middle School in which one of the men had a knife.
According to police, Travis Galarza, 18, and Indejit Singh, 19, both of South Brunswick, met in the Kingston Lane field at about 9:20 a.m. July 12 to fight because of a dispute regarding drugs.
Police said the men agreed to fight to settle the dispute, but that one of the men, Mr. Singh, had a knife.
According to police, Mr. Galarza was able to overpower Mr. Singh and get control of the knife, holding it at Mr. Singh’s throat.
It was at that point that school district employee James Speldos saw what was taking place and yelled at Mr. Galarza to drop the knife and then called 911, police said.
Police said that Mr. Galarza dropped the knife and fled the scene after seeing Mr. Speldos.
Officers stopped Mr. Galarza driving his brown vehicle on Ridge Road and officers at the scene located Mr. Singh, police said.
Both men were each charged with making terroristic threats and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Mr. Singh was also charged with bringing a weapon to school grounds.
Both men were able to post $1,000 bond each and were released pending a court appearance, according to police.
Chief of Police Raymond Hayducka credited the school employee for stepping in to stop the dispute from escalating.
”These two men were engaged in a dispute in which one brought a weapon on to school grounds,” Chief Hayducka said. “Mr. Speldos quickly intervened to stop the assault and called 911. His actions prevented this situation from getting much worse.”
