Girls from Hillsborough Girl Scouts Hearts of New Jersey Service Unit 72 took on the task of beautifying the Amsterdam Elementary school outdoor classroom this May.
The troops used this as their Take Action project for Junior, Cadette and Senior level journeys. Mike Teeple from Central Jersey Nurseries donated butterfly-attracting plants, shrubs and mulch.
With money from the Amsterdam HSA, the girls were able to buy colorful pinwheels, bird feeders and food, and a sundial. After scrubbing, weeding, raking and painting sayings on rocks, the work paid off.
When classes returned from spring break, they got to enjoy the nicely groomed area. The classroom was used for the time capsule ceremony by returning high school students at the end of the school year. The hope is that future Scouts will continue the upkeep for future classes.
