Blood supplies typically dip low in the summertime, but this year, the situation is worse than normal.
It could be severe weather or heat that has kept people at home. People are away on vacations, and schools are closed.
Hillsborough residents have at least two chances to roll up their sleeves in coming weeks.
On Thursday, Aug. 9, Boy Scout Troop 1776 will hold its seventh annual blood drive in memory of Silvano Zobele at the Neshanic Reformed Church, 715 Amwell Road, from 2 to 7 p.m.
Also, the Blood Center of New Jersey will sponsor a drive from 7:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, in the municipal complex, 379 South Branch Road. It will give a $10 ShopRite gift card to anyone who donates platelets or whole blood. Direct questions to 973-676-4700, ext. 197.
Mr. Zobele, who died of leukemia in June 2006, is the father of Troop 1776 Scouts (and recent Eagle Scout recipients) John and Thomas Zobele.
Since his death, the troop has run the summer blood drive to help the area blood supply during a period of severe shortages.
Appointments may be made by calling Judy Zobele at 908-369-5505 or emailing [email protected]. Appointments also can be made at www.redcrossblood.org/make-donation. Walk-ins are welcome.
At both drives, bring some form of identification. Minors 16 years of age may donate with parental permission.
