By Charles W. Kim, Managing Editor
Police apprehended a 29-year-old man Monday, not only sought in a local assault, but also wanted by the federal division of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, according to officials.
Detectives were seeking Roscoe Melvin, 29, of Edison, for questioning relating to an assault at the Hotel Vincenza on Route 1 July 3, Sgt. James Ryan said.
Detective Ken Herman learned that Mr. Melvin would be in the area of Kingston Lane and George’s Road Monday afternoon, according to Sgt. Ryan.
A team of detectives kept the area under surveillance and finally observed Mr. Melvin in the back seat of a vehicle around 3:43 p.m., Sgt. Ryan said.
Mr. Melvin, who Sgt. Ryan said was wanted on a federal warrant by the ATF for the past two months, was taken into custody without incident by the team.
At police headquarters, police were able to link Mr. Melvin to the assault at the hotel and charged him with aggravated assault in that case.
The alleged assault left the victim with a concussion and a broken jaw, according to Sgt. Ryan.
In addition to the federal warrant for a felon possessing a firearm, Mr. Melvin was also wanted on an outstanding warrant from Marlboro Township in Monmouth County, Sgt. Ryan said.
Mr. Melvin was lodged in the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick pending a court hearing, Sgt. Ryan said.
