HILLSBOROUGH: 4-H’ers are off to the fair today

The 65th Somerset County 4-H Fair continues Thursday, and Friday, Aug. 9 and 10, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the 4-H Fairgrounds, North Branch Park, Milltown Road, Bridgewater.
The fair showcases the achievements of more than 1,000 4-H members. Visitors should stop by the information tent for a schedule of daily events and entertainment, such as dog, horse and livestock shows. 4-H clubs compete and perform in twirling, go-karts, rockets, model trains, planes and robotics.
The Arts Tent, Science Tent and Prep Tent (for the youngest 4-Hers) will be packed with exhibits, activities for visitors, demonstrations and performances. Ten other 4-H tents house a variety of animals, including dairy cows, beef, alpaca, horses, dogs, herpetology, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits and small animals. Most animal tents have a petting area and information about how to join 4-H.
There are no admission or parking fees, no midway and no carnival rides. There is nothing for sale except meals and snacks provided by 20 community organizations. There is free amateur and professional entertainment at three venues for children and adults.
The fair is sponsored by the Somerset County 4-H Association, the Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Somerset County Park Commission, in support of the 4-H Youth Development Program of Rutgers Cooperative Extension.
Free shuttle buses run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day of the fair from the Raritan Valley Community College parking lot on Lamington Road.
