Bordentown Youth, Richard Phillips completes Internship

Gerri Jackson
Dear Editor,
Bordentown resident, Richard Phillips, age 16, is just finishing up a 3 week internship with The Group Workcamp Cares project in Burlington County. The Group Workcamp Cares is an organization that brings teams of teenagers from all over the country and this year from Japan and Korea for a week of home repairs for the elderly and low income families of the area they are serving. Over 300 teenagers participated in the program that ran from 7/28- 8/4. This is a church-based mission and the teens are able to do things such as painting, new shingles, build handicapped ramps, ect.
This year’s camp was sponsored by Columbus Baptist Church and Richard Philips was given the opportunity to serve a voluntary internship with Steve Jackson, Staff Administrator. The week prior to the camp, they visited resident’s homes and made sure all supplies were delivered and counted. They informed residents of what to expect when the workers arrived. Richard rose to the task and often took the lead in talking with the excited recipients. The week of the camp was spent attending to details, overseeing problems that arose and participating in some activities with our visiting teens. The last week was the clean up. Eight projects needed finishing and details needed to be completed.
This was a great chance to learn some leadership skills while serving our community.
Here is a link from the television interview with Staff Administrator, Steve Jackson about the experience. And I have photos of Richard at the sites if you are interested.
Sincerely,
Gerri Jackson
