MANSFIELD Township resident and Boy Scout Victor Csirip is one step closer to achieving Scouting’s highest honor the rank of Eagle Scout.
A member of Troop 45 of Columbus, 17-year-old Victor presented his Eagle Scout project to the Township Committee at its July 25 meeting, The committee unamimously approved the project.
Victor’s Eagle Scout project is a firepit which he plans to put near the gazebo in Veterans Park.
Veteran’s Park, on East Main Street in Columbus, is a small memorial park adjacent to the township’s municipal buildings and is dedicated to township residents who gave their lives serving the country.
Veteran’s Park is located within the 40-acre Mansfield Community Park.
”We can use it for when we have Memorial Day services or when we retire flags,” Victor said.
”Our fire marshal, Douglas Borgstrom, has commended him for his plan and he thinks it is a good idea,” stated Township Clerk Linda Semus. “ He has spoken with him.”
”There would be no cost to the township,” Victor continued, “ All work and labor would be done by the Boy Scout Troop, friends and family.”
Victor also assured the committee the fire pit would have a cover on it when not in use so it would not be used for garbage.
At the meeting, Victor estimated the project would cost a couple hundred dollars for materials. According to Victor’s father Vic Csirip, Victor’s anticipated completion date for the project is Sept. 23 his 18th birthday.
”Can I make a contribution?,” asked Deputy Mayor Robert Higgins, “I truly believe in Boy Scouts.”
In an email to the Register-News on Monday from Victor’s father, he said that Victor’s decision to choose the firepit for his Eagle Scout Project was because, “he (Victor) wanted to give back to the community and have a project that would be lasting for a long time so future flag retirement ceremonies could be done.”
Victor joined Boy Scout Troop 45 in 2006 when he was in the sixth grade. He is a 2012 graduate of Northern Burlington County Regional High School and will be attending Mercer County Community College in the fall where he plans to study physics.
