CRANBURY – Local singer and songwriter, Laurie Davis, was featured at Teddy’s Luncheonette on Main Street last month, where manager George Nikitiades hires musicians to play between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. every other Friday.
Ms. Davis, a 13-year resident of Cranbury, said she has played several times at Teddy’s since beginning singing and songwriting around a year and a half ago.
”I think it was just in me to be a musician,” Ms. Davis said. “I really love it. It’s my favorite thing to do.”
According to Ms. Davis, she started playing at Teddy’s after watching her friends perform there, where she asked Mr. Nikitiades if she could also play there.
”He put me in for the next Friday and he’s been asking me to come back ever since,” Ms. Davis said.
Besides playing at Teddy’s, Ms. Davis has played at a few other venues including the Cranbury Coffee House at the Cranbury Presbyterian Church and several open microphone nights.
According to Ms. Davis, she spans several different genres of music including adult contemporary and children’s music. She also performs both original music and cover songs.
”I have three Children’s CD’s, one worship CD for families, and my newest CD is titled “My Music My Way,” which is adult contemporary style music,” Ms. Davis said.
She said she plays drums and guitar, which she incorporates into her teaching at the Cranbury Presbyterian Nursery School. She teaches music at the school as well as regular classes for four and 5-year-olds, who help inspire her music writing.
According to Mrs. Davis, she also takes inspiration from everyday life and her family, having written several songs about her two sons.
”Everybody can’t be that number one rock star,” Mrs. Davis said. “But if you just have a little bit of what you like to do in your life that could be enough. You don’t have to give up your dream.”
Teddy’s is located on North Main St. and stays open late every other Friday for patrons listening to the musicians.
”Every second Friday of the month, we have the Bert Brothers play,” Mr. Nikitiades said.
According to Mr. Nikitiades, weather permitting, he would like to try and have the musicians play outside as well.
Ms. Davis’s music and CDs are available from Amazon and iTunes and she will be playing from 8-10 p.m. at It’s a Grind Coffee House in Plainsboro on Sept. 29.
In addition to singing, Mrs. Davis gives music lessons and performs at birthday parties as well as directs the choir at the Cranbury Presbyterian Church.
