D.A. Ramsey, of Upper Freehold
After reading Amadeo D’Adamo Jr.’s letter to the editor, Town Forum, Aug. 9, 2012 — “Ban assault rifles, compensate owners,” one might be emotionally inclined to agree with Mr. D’Adamo’s plea to keep assault rifles out of hospital nurseries.
In support of his argument, Mr. D’Adamo’s leads off by redefining the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution to the extent, one might wonder, if he read it at all.
The Second Amendment reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
You will note, Mr. D’Adamo, that this Amendment is written as one sentence, and that “being necessary to the security of a free State” refers to “A well regulated Militia.”
That “shall not be infringed”, refers to “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms.” These four statements are separated by commas and, together, form the whole of the Second Amendment.
For myself, Mr. D’Adamo, re-defining the Second Amendment is criminal.
