The Indo-American Cultural Foundation of Central New Jersey will hold its fourth annual Indian Independence Day festival Sunday, according to organizers.
The festival is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Brunswick Family YMCA on Culver Road.
Admission is free to everyone and the event will feature food, games, activities and cultural dances performed by local dance students.
Several hundred people attended the event last year during the third annual Indian Independence Day Festival.
Fair weather welcomed that commemoration of India’s 64th year of independence from Great Britain.
The annual event is hosted by the non-profit foundation in an attempt to “bring everyone together so that we don’t have a fractured society,” said Board of Directors member, Surabhi Agarwal during last year’s festival.
Among those attending the celebration last year, were local leaders including, Mayor Frank Gambatese, Township Councilmen Joe Camorata, John O’Sullivan, and Charles Carley. Middlesex County Freeholder and former township Deputy Mayor Carol Barrett.
Mayor Gambatese said, at the time, that the Indian community makes up about 30 percent of the township.
Musical compositions and concentrated attention to cultural dance by the many performing artists were showcased along with instrumental accord.
In addition to this festival, the foundation has also held the opening of harvest time festival with the Navratri Celebration at South Brunswick High School in October.
According to Ms. Agarwal, that event brings about 10,000 people during two weekends of customary merriment involving the art of Garba dance and traditional folk music.
