MARLBORO — One pedestrian has died from injuries he sustained after being struck by a van on the night of Aug. 23.

According to Marlboro police, two pedestrians were struck by a van in the southbound lanes of Route 9 in Marlboro.

Emergency medical personnel transported the individuals — one male and one female — to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, according to Marlboro police Capt. Steve Mennona.

A helicopter transported one person to the hospital and an ambulance transported the second individual to the hospital.

Mennona told the News Transcript that the male who was struck was pronounced dead at 11:43 p.m. Aug. 23. No additional information about that person was released by police.

The female who was struck was listed in critical condition as of the evening of Aug. 23.

The driver of the van, who is a male, sustained injuries and was transported to CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of the Marlboro Motor Lodge, Mennona said, adding that the pedestrians did not use a crosswalk in their attempt to cross Route 9.

“They attempted to cross on a bad part of the highway,” he said.

Marlboro police arrived on the scene at 10:45 p.m. Route 9 south was closed at Texas Road with assistance from the Old Bridge Police Department.

The intersection of Route 9 and Texas Road was eventually reopened, but the southbound lanes of Route 9 were not opened to automobile travel until after 2 a.m. Aug. 24, Mennona said.

Some members of the public who saw the pedestrians get hit by the van attempted to assist the injured individuals, he added.

“We had people in the area come to try to help with first aid until the police arrived,” he said.

There was no indication that the driver of the van was intoxicated at the time the pedestrians were struck, according to police.
