The Senate on Monday unanimously approved dedicating the Route 206 bypass in Hillsborough to the late Assemblyman Peter J. Biondi, of the 16th District.
Assembly Republicans Jack M. Ciattarelli and Donna Simon said it’s now time for the Assembly to follow through on this tribute to a public servant and veteran.
”Peter J. Biondi advocated fervently for this bypass because he knew what it meant to Hillsborough’s quality of life and the realization of its downtown vision plan,” said Assemblyman Ciattarelli, R-Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer and Middlesex. “Now that this legislation has passed the Senate unanimously, it is my hope the Assembly will follow through with this fitting tribute to honor Pete’s memory.”
Both Assemblyman Ciattarelli and Assemblywoman Simon sponsored A750, which would direct the state transportation commissioner to dedicate the bypass through Hillsborough Township as the Peter J. Biondi Bypass.
There is no expense to state taxpayers to dedicate the bypass as proposed by the legislation.
Sen. Christopher “Kip” Bateman, R-Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer and Middlesex, sponsored the bipartisan companion bill, S1899, which passed the Senate unanimously on Monday.
”Peter Biondi left a lasting legacy in the communities he served, and we can ensure his name will remain a visible reminder for future generations of what it means to be a truly dedicated public servant,” said Assemblywoman Simon, R-Hunterdon, Somerset, Mercer and Middlesex. “This is a worthy honor of a true American statesman that the Assembly should pass as soon as possible.”
Mr. Biondi, who lost his battle with cancer in November, served the 16th District for 14 years. He previously had served as Hillsborough mayor and Somerset County freeholder.
He was instrumental in getting funding for the Route 206 bypass.
