JAMESBURG — A Sunday morning fire at a Gatzmer Avenue apartment building displaced more than a dozen residents, according to authorities.
Patrolman Jeff Sellmeyer spotted the fire while on patrol at 7:30 a.m. Sunday and evacuated residents in four apartments in the building at 287 Gatzmer Avenue, police said.
According to one of the firefighters on the scene, between 14-16 residents were removed from the building.
The Jamesburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and had the fire under control in 30 minutes, according to police.
That department was assisted by firefighters from the Helmetta Volunteer Fire Department and the Englishtown Volunteer Fire Department.
One of the four apartments sustained extensive damage from the fire and the other three units sustained water and smoke damage, according to police.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but does not appear to be suspicious, according to police.
Displaced residents were being assisted by the American Red Cross and no injuries were reported, police said.
